The ingredients to avoid in the beauty routine

Hello beauties,

In 2015, a study showed that women put around 168 chemicals on their skin every day!! These products range from simple shower gel, to shampoo, through body cream to makeup!

The word ‘chemists’ is not necessarily the same as ‘bad’. Among the most appreciative chemical ingredients of cosmetics are, for example, some beloveds such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C (which makes magic on our skin), retinol and collagen. Although the European Union tries to protect our health and prevent the use of substances classified as carcinogenic or toxic in the cosmetic industry, the truth is that some of these may still be present in our daily lives, only in very small quantities.

Because of that, for today’s post, we decided to show you a list of the top ten chemical ingredients that to this day are considered harmful to health and that you should avoid.

1.Parabens

Parabens are considered preservatives and we can find them practically everywhere. If a product contains water, it most likely has a parabens in its composition, to prevent the growth of bacteria. This ingredient should be avoided, since parabens are endocrinology disruptors, that is, they mimic estrogens in the body, which can cause hormonal imbalances.

2. Sodium Sulfate

This foaming agent is used in various care products, including skin care and cosmetics, shampoos and toothpastes. They are called surfactants and tend to cause skin irritation and can even trigger allergies.

3. Toluene

This chemical is usually found in nail varnishes and hair dyes. It is a petroleum derivative and can be highly oxide to the nervous and immune system. During pregnancy, this ingredient should be avoided.

4. Triclosan

This powerful antiseptic is authorized by European legislation to be used in concentrations up to 0.3% in various products from deodorants, soaps and toothpastes. However, it is a toxic and harmful component to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes, and has been linked to gastroenteritis and skin infections.

5. Polyethylene

Used in various types of cosmetics as thickener, especially in creams, shampoos and sunscreens. The problem with polyethylene glycol lies in the fact that it is generally contaminated with ethylene oxide, which despite being used as a medical sterilizer, is also considered a carcinogenic ingredient.

6. Phthalates

This ingredient is usually added to plastic to make it less brittle. It is common to find phthalates in fragrances or products such as varnishes and hair lacquer. They are endocrine disruptors, and can cause endocrine or reproductive problems.

7. Oxibenzone

Oxybenzone is a chemical used in sunscreen products because it is a chemical filter. It is also known as an endocrine disturbing agent, linked to skin allergies and even an agent that alters thyroid function in the long term. Oxibenzone can also be found in lip balms, makeup and moisturizers.

8. Formaldehyde

This ingredient is usually used as a preservative in cosmetics and very often in hair straightening. Although it is not prohibited, high concentrations are related to respiratory and neurological problems.

9. Mineral oil

The problem with this ingredient is at its origin, oil, which despite being natural, is not renewable.

10. Parfums

Don’t believe in a product that claims to have no perfume. This is because manufacturers are not obliged to reveal what is really in their fragrances, leaving room to assume moqueca can be a mixture of allergens and irritants.
